Vero Beach - David Towne Ellis, 86, of Vero Beach, FL, passed away on May 21, 2021. Dave was born on February 27, 1935, to J. A. T. Ellis and Dorothy (Schlusemeyer) Ellis. The youngest of two sons, he grew up in the Ellis family home in Westwood, MA. Dave studied Electrical Engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology and received an M.S.E.E with high honors from Northeastern University. Early in his career, Dave was a founder at the start up firm Cambridge Memories and later was an engineer and manager at Digital Equipment Corporation until his retirement. In addition to his many achievements, including developing several U. S. engineering patents, he taught electrical engineering at Northeastern and Boston University throughout his career.
Dave prided himself on being up-to-date on the politics of the day. After retiring, he became a Master of Tai Chi. Dave was a volunteer with AARP Tax Aid Preparation for many years. He introduced electronic tax preparation to their process by seeking donations for computer equipment and training volunteers to utilize tax software. Dave was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, FL where he served as an Elder in Finance.
Dave is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sonia M. Ellis of Vero Beach, FL, his daughter, Lauren and her husband Barry Colella of Chelmsford, MA, son Daniel of Charlestown, MA, grandchildren Hannah, Carina, Ethan, and Tess, brother Theodore Ellis of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and many nieces and nephews.
Dave is predeceased by his wife and mother of his children, Elizabeth (Osenton) Ellis of Holliston, MA.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 1 at 11:30 am, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Vero Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2555 - 58th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL or the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
