70-year-old Richard Anthony Owen, Sr. of Fairfield, died at 3:47pm on Thursday, May 20 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN.

Richard was born on September 23, 1950, in Wayne County, IL, to Emerial Lee (Shorty) and Dedie Elizabeth (Lanham) Owen, Sr.

As a young man, Richard worked with his brothers, Gene, Rex, and Ronnie at Owen Brothers Coal Yard. He served in the United States Army, spending time in Germany. When he was discharged, he went to work for the City of Fairfield and was the superintendent of the light plant when he retired. Richard attended Ebenezer Methodist Church in rural Wayne County, and was part of a small group that kept the small country church open until it was permanently closed in 2016.

Survivors include two sons David (Amanda) Owen of Fairfield, and Richard Owen, Jr. of Bone Gap, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, three sisters Virginia (Bud) Bashore of Fairfield, Barbara (Scottie) Dewitt of Leesburg, FL, and Shirley (K.D.) Simpson of Fairfield, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers Emerial Owen, Jr., Gene Owen, Rexford Owen, and Ronnie Owen, three sisters Kathleen Simpson, Carolyn Weger, and Sharon Witwer, along with an infant sister Jerry Ann, and an infant brother, Dennis Russell.

Burial: Ebenezer Cemetery.
Military rites will be provided by the Anthony Wayne Post #176 and the Wayne County Post #4535 VFW.
