Hilda Freeman, long time Siskiyou County resident, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021 in Yreka, California with family by her side. She was 94.
Hilda Dean Poindexter was born on May 26, 1926 at Civit in south-central Oklahoma. Hilda grew up with her parents, three sisters, doting grandparents and bunches of aunts, uncles and cousins. With grub box attached to the back of a Model T Ford, nine year old Dean and family migrated west with stops in Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Imperial Valley and eventually Lancaster, California in the Mojave Desert where she graduated from Antelope Valley High School.
Hilda met Roy Stewart Freeman in Lancaster and they were married in Anaheim, California on August 4, 1949. They raised three children, Alan, Linda and Brian, from the Mojave Desert to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Orcas Island in the Pacific Northwest.
Hilda worked administrative assistant positions in several school districts as well as the lead assistant for a rocket scientist at Genge Engineering in Ridgecrest-China Lake in California. She was involved with the Lutheran Women's Missionary League holding positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
Hilda had an adventurous and creative spirit helping Roy and later family, build and move in and out of a dozen houses, provisioning for vacations including a five month trailer trip around the United States, and a sailboat journey to Alaska. She also taught her children skills such as sewing and cooking.
Hilda had a strong faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ and was a witness to the end. Her favorite song, "How Great Thou Art" provided comfort and assurance. She lived a good life.
Hilda is preceded in death by her husband Roy; survived by her children Alan, Linda and Brian; grandchildren Darrian, Tristan, Alana, Sevi, Alexander, Summer, Solay, Dylan, SiDonnie, Bessie, and ten great grandchildren.
