The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Dreamer, Hooligan Gentleman Farmer and Septuagenarian in his prime, Paul Wilson Mitchell, Jr, 73, of Rapid City, passed away at his home on May 23, 2021. Paul was born on September 7, 1947 to Starline and Mitch, Sr in Auburn, NE. Spending his childhood on the Big Muddy, in Pierre, SD. being a self-proclaimed river rat, he liked to spend his days much like Tom Sawyer swimming and fishing in the Mighty Mo. After graduating from T.F. Riggs High School in 1965, quite literally the day after, Paul, along with 6 other Pierre/Ft. Pierre guys who called themselves "The Magnificent Seven" enlisted in The South Dakota Army National Guard and found the first bus out of Pierre to Basic Training.

After completing Basic Training, he went on to start his studies at the University of South Dakota majoring in Journalism and Psychology. Paul was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity House, a domicile of clean and healthy living with only the best intentions. "We are the great big hairy-chested men, we are the ATO's, we drink whiskey, with the best of them, Gin with the worst of them, Beer with the rest of them, we are the great big hairy-chested men, We are the ATO's". In his off time and on sabbatical from his studies, Paul enjoyed, a little too much at times, all the extra-curricular activities college life had to offer, and then some (from what we are told, not from the man himself.) Whether that was piling into his '49 Hudson (Uncle Roy's car, Starline scored the deal) at semester break with a couple cases of Grain Belt in the back, a vehicle full of his other Frat brothers and their respective dates, driving down the interstate in whiteout blizzard conditions, in an all too futile attempt to reach Pierre by nightfall. Paul was the driver, along with his copilots hanging out each window directing him which direction to turn, did indeed make it to Pierre, not by nightfall. (True Story) A very friendly Police Officer escorted the boys, along with their respective dates, home that evening, by escort. He made headlines again by volunteering to be pulled in a toboggan by a car going 50 MPH on a frozen lake, with a high temp of -4. One of his many mottos in life was "I may not look, or act, my age. This is why. I made a choice. I never grew up"

After college, Paul combined his love of writing and the military into one by enlisting in the Army and shipped off to Heidelberg, Germany for a year spending his time journaling for the US Army Europe Command. Paul came back from semi fluent in German from his experience as years later he was able to pass on his one remaining linguistic skill to his daughter, with the ever-important knowledge of how to order a double quarter pounder with cheese, please, in German. Sergeant Mitchell completed his tour with the Army on September 26, 1977 as an Army journalist.

Paul followed his love for the Black Hills finding himself in Rapid City, South Dakota. While doing editorial work for Black Hills News which he co-owned and wrote for, he met his future bride and mother to his children at the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce. They were united in marriage in Rapid City, SD in September of 1981. His first child, a son, was born in July of 1982, followed by a daughter in May of 1984. Paul had quite the way caring for his young children. He remained in awe of being a father until the very end. He had the knack of laying down on a bed with his kids and reading out loud to calm them down when needed, yet kept things interesting by always deciding it would be a good idea to sing songs directly into the drive-through speaker when taking them to get a fast-food treat. Burger King did not want to hear Chantilly Lace sung to them every 2nd Wednesday of the month, but Paul decided that they indeed did.

Being entrepreneurial minded, Paul owned his own car dealership in Rapid City and later opened a Loan business.

His love of writing was always an ever-present part in his life. His first book "That's Dave" was published January 1, 1990, followed by his second book, a bestseller in the motorcycle world "Black Hills Motorcycle Rides" in January of 2010. Paul worked at Black Hills Harley Davidson slangin bikes and breakin hearts, 'Once A Salesman, Always A Salesman.' Paul had a way of spinning the yarn to complete any and every sale, all while falling in love more himself with the motorcycle world and community as it's lifeblood. This insatiable thirst for the beauty of the Hills, Motorcycle Brother and Sisterhood, plenty of life experience knowledge, he was led to begin his career and new chapter of his life alongside Rod at Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, SD. Paul was originally brought on board to talk to people and close a deal with a new app that was launched with the purpose of bringing the motorcycle community together in one place via mobile app. He did much more than that, in true Paul fashion. Knowing that a rider's journey is just as important as their destination, using his keen ability and desire to connect with any personality along with his outrageous sense of humor, the app took off running. He also helped establish the largest Chamber of Commerce (with partner in shenanigans Woody- (respectively Skid Marks and Salamander Breath) from the Rider Friendly App at The Legendary Buffalo Chip (The Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling!!!), being a Program Manager. He was a great influence in and for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and played a monumental part in The Memorial Ride honoring Veterans across the world who shared a love for motorcycles and their country.

Paul loved to travel, most often with his no-nonsense partner in crime, "M". His fascination and love of Mark Twain brought him to Missouri more than once, specifically Hannibal where Mark Twain spent his childhood days. They enjoyed taking their RV around the U.S. stopping at campsites with their dogs Sam and Sully, visiting friends in Costa Rica, Florida, Yellowstone, California and most recently Las Vegas to reunite with Army buddies he was stationed with in Germany. He was often seen around his family business with the shop dogs Iris and Kooper, delivering coffee or stopping in for his daily check-ins that were so important to him.

He was preceded in death by father, Paul W. Mitchell, Sr and mother, Starline Whitmore Mitchell. He is survived by his children and his 2 granddaughters, his 2 sisters , love of his life, her daughter, stepson Jason and granddaughter, beloved dog Sam, and Evidence (Kittymeow), Iris and Kooper, "Banty" the rooster and his crew of chickens and hens. There was never an animal that Paul didn't like. Passing to the rainbow bridge to meet Paul will be Sadie, Gussy (Augusta Von Freckles), Bitty Boo, Pop Up, Gray Ghost, Drake, Kai, Duke and Sully, many extended family and friends through the Motorcycle Community, Followers of the almighty Historian, The Magnificent Six (adopted sons) and anyone with a passion for a good story and a zest for life.

No one was more curious to see what he would do next more than he. Paul was larger than life, and had the whole world figured out and at his fingertips with his out-of-the-ordinary experiences. The idea of Paul not being here anymore seems outside the natural order of things. He was a writer, storyteller, proud American, motorcycle rider, partner, father, grandfather, brother and most importantly, a friend. He may have left us too soon, but he lived far more than most people could have ever dreamed of. He lived his life his way, on his own terms, leaving us that he left behind what next finely woven threads of circumstance are around the corner. Make the memories, take the pictures. "In spite of ourselves, we'll end up sitting on a rainbow. "You made it. No regrets. Ride on. Write on. Right on, and we will for you, Paul.

KOKO- Catch you on the flip-flop, P.W.
