She attended Mitchell Elementary, then on to Columbia Elementary in North Denver after the family moved there in 1936.
Dee then went on to attend Skinner Junior High, and graduated from North High School.
Part of this time, the family lived at 38th & Clay St, above the "Clay St. Cleaners", which her father had started, in addition to his occupation as a tailor.
The family attended North Presbyterian Church, where she began teaching Sunday School at the age of 16.
During her junior year at North High, she was elected as Honorary Cadet Sargent, and later, Honorary Cadet Captain, in the R.O.T.C.
During this time, she became friends with another Cadet Captain, named Stuart Clark.
Stu introduced her to his older brother Bill, who had just returned from serving in the Navy, during WWII.
Bill & Dee began dating, and were eventually married in 1948. They remained married for 64 years, until Bill's death in 2012.
After the wedding, since Bill was still attending the University of Colorado, they moved to Boulder.

In 1952, they bought their first house on S. Shoshone St.
In 1956, they bought an older, but larger home at 39th & Xavier.

She made the decision to attend the newly opened Metropolitan State Collage.
She was nervous about returning to academia after 17 years, and was concerned about competing with all of the younger students. After a while, however, she was looked upon as the "Dorm Mother", and was often approached for advice, and help, (like sewing on buttons)
Regardless of her apprehensions, she excelled in school, posting only one "C" during 4 years of college.
