Edwin "Bill" L. Johnson
1932 ~ 2020
Edwin "Bill" L. Johnson passed away peacefully on December 10th at the age of 88. He finally realized his desire to be reunited with his sweet wife who passed away earlier this year. He was born on August 21, 1932 in Spring Canyon, Utah to Joseph Fielding Johnson and Annie Naomi Watson. He was the youngest of five children. Two of his older brothers died within days of their birth. How wonderful it is for dad to meet them! He and our mother were sealed in the Salt Lake temple and enjoyed more than 62 years together.
Dad was raised in a coal mining town. His dad was a coal miner. They didn't have a lot in regards to material possessions but they had all they needed. Their vacations were primarily camping and fishing. Each year the mine would shut down for 10 days. They would load up their car and travel to a place called Old Folks Flat near the Huntington stream where they would camp and fish the river. Dad developed a great love of fishing that continued throughout his life. Dad also loved to hunt, either deer or pheasants. He would tell us stories of him hunting with his dad. Dad loved to golf and played throughout most of his life. He and two buddies golfed together each week well into their seventies.
Dad entered the Air Force after graduating from high school. He served several years and spent time as a court stenographer in the Philippines. He was a little nervous but excited for one of his granddaughters when she was called to serve a Church mission there. After returning home from the Air Force, he attended Brigham Young University and graduated with an accounting degree. He spent most of his career working for Unisys as an accountant.
Dad had a great love of dogs. He would tell us about the dogs he had in his youth and early adult years. During our growing up years, there was rarely a time that we didn't have some type of a dog as a pet. Our mother, to her credit, tolerated them. After our dad retired, he spent some time volunteering at the Humane Society walking and playing with the dogs there. Some of his grandchildren were able to accompany him on some of his visits.
For dad, this life was all about family. Virtually every vacation or hunting or fishing excursion involved the family. He and our mother were supportive of and attended the various activities that their children or grandchildren were involved in whenever they could. He dearly loved his family.
Dad was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He set a wonderful example of principles taught by the Church. He was honest and believed in hard work and expected his children to be the same. He was a man of his word. If he said that he was going to do something you knew it would be done. If he said he would be somewhere at a certain time, you knew he would be there-early.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children Joseph (Sally), Linda (John) White, Bret (Stacey) and Cory, 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn Hanks Johnson, his parents, Joseph and Naomi Johnson, his brothers Harold "Bud" Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Grant Johnson and his sister Geraldine Johnson Perkins.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from Inspiration Hospice and Wentworth at Willow Creek Assisted Living for their compassion and care provided to our father.
