Norm was taken to join his family in Heaven on May 20, 2021 in Klamath Falls, Ore. The youngest of seven children, Norm was born on April 8, 1932, in Baker, Ore. to Mamie and Boone Miles. He worked on his family's ranch in Eastern Oregon before being drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Norm served for two years including one tour in Okinawa as a radio repairman in an MP battalion. He met his soulmate and future wife Jean on a blind date set up by Norm's brother. They were engaged shortly before he left for training and deployment to Okinawa.
After completing his service, Norm returned to Oregon, moved to Klamath Falls, and married Jean in 1955. They had four children: Kim, Dennis, Carol, and Janet. Norm owned a service station in the 50s and worked as a self-employed auto mechanic for two decades before working as a mechanic at Weyerhaeuser, from which he retired in 1994.
Norm attended OIT for a few years in the early 70s and mid 90s and was an avid fan of OIT sports, especially the basketball and softball programs. He supported OIT athletics for decades and was incredibly proud to be presented with an Honorary Alumni Award in 2019. Norm was also a fan of college football, college baseball, and college softball and rooted for the Oregon State Beavers.
He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, camping, wood cutting, welding, traveling, photography, and playing pinochle, cribbage, and golf. Norm loved dogs. He was very handy and enjoyed do-it-yourself projects and making repairs. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Norm converted to Catholicism as an adult and became very active in the Church. He enjoyed sharing his faith with subsequent generations and truly tried to live the tenets of his faith.
Norm was a humble, intelligent, friendly, generous man with a great sense of humor. His passing has left a huge hole in our hearts and our lives and he will be missed terribly. Norm passed as he lived, surrounded by love, and thinking of others. He is preceded in death by his wife Jean; his daughters Janet and Carol; his son-in-law Mike; his parents; and his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter Kim; son Dennis; grandchildren Brian (Monica), Jennifer (Tim), Trina (Shane), Denny (Summer), and Kyndra, great grandchildren Kennadee, Patrick, Alyck, Corben, Maggie, Jeff, Abigail, Carolyn, Katherine, and Harlie, nephew Roger, and numerous nieces and nephews.
