Nelwyn O'Brien Smith, 92, of Redfields Road, Appomattox, died Tuesday, May 25, 2021. She was the wife of the late James Allen Smith.

Born in Appomattox County, May 17, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Nettie Conner and James H. O'Brien, Sr. Nelwyn was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 3rd and 4th graders. She was a graduate of Appomattox High School and James Madison University. Nelwyn was a librarian for Danville Middle School, Appomattox County Library and Appomattox Primary School. After retirement, she and Jim travelled and enjoyed volunteering.

She was survived by two sons, Allen Smith and wife, Kelly of Pamplin and Blair Smith and wife, Lisa of Appomattox; one grandson, Jeremy Smith; three step-grandchildren, Vann Slayton and wife, Sierra and their son, Kameron; Dylan Slayton and wife, Catherine and their son, Carter; and Sarah Slayton and her son, Trenton; and two sisters-in-law, JoAnn O'Brien and Nell O'Brien.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Melissa Smith; step-mother, Margaret O'Brien; six brothers, Dr. Clyde O'Brien, James O'Brien, Jr., Wallace O'Brien, Wyatt O'Brien, Tommy O'Brien and Dicky O'Brien; four sisters, Ouida Persinger, Eloise Burnette, Claudine O'Brien and Maurine Hockman.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Norman Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m., until 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2021 at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the homes of her sons.
