Co. C, 3rd Virginia Inf. CSA. 51 years of age when he died. Buried on his farmProbably died of injuries received in the War of Northern Aggression. I was told by Aunt Naidean that her grandmother Mary Elizabeth Meredith Maitland told her, when Robert F. retuned, he left a trail of blood on the road leading to their home. He was missing a foot and an eye. He was a conscript who joined in Feb. 1864 and was sent to Ft. Lee in Sept. 1864. He was 32 years old. The next record we have is when he was sent to Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond sometime in March 1865. He was released to the AAG (Assistant Adjunct General. Since I can find no record of a Confederate Assistant Adjunct General) and by this time Confederate soldiers as well as Jefferson Davis were beginning to consider fleeing Richmond, I believe he was actually turned over to the Union and they in turn sent him home. He was too injured to be of any good to them or the Confederates.
Robert F. and Mary Elizabeth Meredith Maitland went on to have 4 additional children, 9 in all. 5 girls and 4 boys. In the 1880 census he is listed as being sick with "dysentery". His grave site in located on what was his farm. The address is 15801 Baltimore Rd., DeWitt, Dinwiddie, VA. Coordinates are 37.055299 , -77.714311. The site is obstructed. Hard to get in to see the tombstone. We were also unable to actually determine whether or not there were other graves there. It was impossible to see. But we all feel there were. It's a fairly big area with a fence around it but the fence is falling down. This property was originally 200 acres. Present owner refused to let us clean up the site. We will continue to try to gain permission.
