Mary Padden was born in Castle Bar, Ireland, June 28, 1842, and died at her home in Moingona, Iowa, March 1, 1912, aged nearly seventy years. When nine years of age she came with her family to Canada, where she grew to young womanhood. July 7, 1862, she was united in marriage with Dennis Deegan at Ottawa City, Canada. During the civil war they came to the United States and finally settled at Moingona where they have since made their home. Six years ago her health began to fail and later that dread disease, diabetes developed and for the past two years she was practically helpless. Though suffering intense pain and distress, she was ever patient and cheerful and bore her suffering with a sublime patience that appealed to all who knew her; but continually prayed to God that she might be relieved of her suffering and anchor her soul in the haven of rest. She was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and remained a devoted and loyal member to the end.
About two months ago her son-in-law, F.B. Tillett, was killed while in discharge of his duties as conductor on the C/ & M/W/ Ry. This was a terrible shock to her and she rapidly failed until death relieved her.
To Mr. and Mrs. Deegan were born eight children, two dying in infancy. The aged husband and father and six daughters are left to mourn the death of a loving and devoted wife and mother. The daughters are Mrs. E.M. Hardan, of Webb City, Missouri, Mrs. E.F. Morrill, of Oelwein, Iowa, Mrs. A.E. Blythe, of Ogden, Mrs. George Eamer, Mrs. F.B. Tillett and Mrs. I.S. Shaw, of Boone. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. All were present except Mrs. Haran and Mrs. Morrill. Other relatives present for the funeral were a brother, James Padden, and a nephew, Harry Padden, both from Chicago.
The funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart church at 10:00 o’clock Monday morning, conducted by the Rev. Father P.P. Barron and attended by many sorrowing relatives and friends. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery in Boone.
