R.M. Adduddell Instantly Kills Z.T. Shipley at Flora as Result of Old Grudge

Flora, Ill., Jan 16.-Ex-Mayor R.M. Adduddell killed
Night Marshal Z.T. Shipley
last night as the result of an old grudge, then went home and calmly retired to bed.

Adduddell, who has for years been the terror of the entire community, went to his home about 8 o'clock last night and secured his shotgun. He then went to a dark place on West North avenue and discharged the gun twice, thereby drawing Shipley to the spot. When Shipley arrived and saw who it was he told Adduddell to stop shooting. While talking to him, Shipley made a move toward him and Adduddell aimed his gun and pulled the trigger. The charge took effect in Shipley's neck and chin. The wounded man arose to his feet, staggered along a distance and fell dead. A crowd gathered quickly, but the murderer kept them away from him by threatening them with his gun. He was found in bed this morning, sleeping, and was arrested. At present he is under indictment charging him with "boot legging."

Former Mayor Sent to Pen

Flora, Ill., Sept. 25. - R.M. Adduddell, former mayor, was sentenced to thirty years imprisonment today on conviction of murdering Zach Shipley last January on account of the latter's activity against violators of the liquor laws. Adduddell discharged a shotgun to attract Shipley's attention and when the latter approached, Adduddell fired both barrels into the marshal's face.

Note - Robert M. "Rollin" Adduddell was sent to the Southern Illinois Penitentiary in Chester. In April and November 1919, he was denied parole by the Governor of Illinois, based on recommendation by the division of pardons and paroles.

He appears to have been paroled by 1920, however, as he was living in Kern County, California at the time. He died in 1928 and is buried in Clay County, Illinois in the same cemetery where lies the victim of his murder in 1909.
