Betty Ruth McKinney Wagner passed away in Wichita Falls, Texas, on April 3, 2023.
She was born in Forney, (Kaufman County), Texas, on July 5, 1928. She completed her early schooling in Coleman, Texas, and moved on to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the daughter of Ruth Tune McKinney and Fletcher Marshall McKinney. Predeceasing her were husband, Bryan P. (Lou) Wagner; mother and father; and brother, Fletcher Marshall McKinney, Jr.
Betty's work experience began at the age of 12 when she worked for her father who encouraged her to develop her skills (Gregg Brief Shorthand and Typing, Bookkeeping and Office Management) so that she could make a living in the business world and maintain her independence. She held positions in insurance, education, oil and gas, legal profession, banking and investments. She always said that everyone should work in a bank, it was the best experience in the world. She loved people, and the banking profession provided knowledge about money and banking, loans and investments, all people-oriented. She retired from MBank of Wichita Falls, Texas, as Senior Vice President.
Betty was involved in the music world from the time she was four years old, beginning with church youth choir and piano lessons. She learned to play various musical instruments in band and orchestra, and through the years sang both sacred and secular solo and choral works in the community. She developed programs in music as well as banking in the area. She would combine music with her banking speeches saying, "It is always easier to remember something set in rhythm and music for the listener to clap or sing back… just another process in learning." She also sang with the "Can Do Gals" representing the Bank in Wichita Falls and surrounding area for several years. Participating in Oratorio Chorus at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, for many years was of special interest along with enrolling in various courses in music, money, banking, and economics.
On May 1, 2018, Betty was recognized by MSU TEXAS Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts Department of Music for over 63 years of support and devotion to the Musicians of the Midwestern State University Music Department and the Wichita Falls community.
Betty was a disciplined donor of blood and platelets at the American Red Cross for over 45 years beginning in 1965 with 25 gallons of whole blood, followed by over 600 visits to donate platelets- singles and doubles. She would always encourage other to do the same. She was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the American Red Cross for being the longest calendar member of their life-saving team. She was also the recipient of The Spirit of Texoma Award, having been chosen by her peers to exemplify the true Spirit of Texoma. The award was presented by KFDX 3, My TV KJBO, Texoma's Home Page, FOX and Sports Center of Wichita Falls.
In addition to serving on numerous committees, in civic organizations, banking, church, the Presbyterian Women and Palo Duro Presbytery, she was an ordained Deacon and Elder at Fain Presbyterian Church, Wichita Falls. In 1983, she was elected Commissioner to the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly in Atlanta, Georgia. Betty was also honored as Elder Emerita at New Hope Church, and had been a member of the Church Choir since 1952.
For over 60 years, Betty and her husband, Lou, enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and in foreign countries, not only seeing the scenery but meeting interesting people. They also challenged themselves to use every type of transportation available to convey them to their destinations- many unique experiences!
