George Henderson Barnes was born August 25, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Charlie Lucille Barnes and Robert Douglas Chatman.

He was baptized at an early age at the United Church of Altgeld Gardens.

George graduated from Carver High School in Chicago, Illinois in 1968. He served in the United States Air Force as a Missile Technician. There, he received numerous commendations from his superiors including a very special one from President Richard Nixon, Commander in Chief.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Emlyn Brown Thomas on June 5, 2001. Their love spanned two decades, three houses, and two states. George enjoyed watching a good movie with his beloved Emlyn.

George enjoyed a forty-three year career as a steelworker before retiring from ArcelorMittal Steel Company on July 10, 2010.

As a member of a social club called, "The Soulful Upsetters", he often filled in for the DJ and had an extensive music collection.

He enjoyed traveling, baking, and photography. George was never an avid sports fan, but did enjoy playing softball as a young adult, He loved comedy and his infectious laugh warmed the hearts of all around him. Blessed with strong hands and high intellect, he could build or fix just about anything. He often engaged in home improvement projects for himself and others. A true technology lover, he was frequently the first to get the latest gadgets.

On Friday, May 14, 2021; George passed away at WellStar West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlie Lucille Barnes; sister, A. Lucille Barnes; and brother, Henry Barnes.
