Lafayette, LA-----With deepest sorrow, the family of William (Will) Spears, age 66, announces his sudden passing on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. He was a long time resident of Lafayette, LA.

Will was born in Eunice, LA on August 17, 1954. He graduated from Eunice High School in 1972. He went on to obtain multiple degrees in Psychology and History from UL in Lafayette. He worked at multiple jobs as a bank loan officer, IRS investigator and newspaper journalist before finding his passion as a professor of History at UL in Lafayette. He held that position teaching three classes a day from 1994 until his passing in 2021.

Will was well liked by his students and co-workers. It is said that a teacher, like a good entertainer, first must hold his audience's attention, then can teach his lesson. Will did so with his abundant gift of humor for 27 years. He truly loved the energy of his students and campus life.

You could see this classic "old time" professor riding his bicycle across campus with his backpack and tennis racket in tow. He lived one block from campus and rode his bike everywhere not excluding CC's Coffee House, where he met friends every afternoon. He ended his day returning home to his cats Bruiser and Gizmo.

He loved travel, tennis, reading and music, which included the annual New Orleans Jazz Fest. He was a long time fan of the UL Lafayette Sports Program and the NY Yankees. He and a friend once drove non-stop from Lafayette to New York City to watch a Yankees game, left the stadium and drove non-stop home like a true fan.

Will is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Lee "Slim" Spears and Winnie Mae Taylor Spears; a sister Diana Lavergne, of Eunice, LA, and a nephew, Shane Spears of Kingsport, TN. He is survived by a brother, Kenneth R. Spears (Dale); a niece, Lori Spears Strahan (Dak) of Lake Charles, LA; a niece, Candace Lavergne of Eunice, LA; one grand niece; three grand nephews and extended family of the heart.

Will was cremated as per his wishes and will be remembered at a small private gathering. I am sure his spirit will be laughing with us as we share memories of his kind heart, gentle spirit and awesome sense of humor, with, of course, a touch of spice.

"Our Life is measured in giving, not in taking". Will gave much more than he received in this life.

Well done thou good and faithful servant. Enter thou into the Joy of the Lord -Matthew 25-21.

RIP Ragin' Cajun
