Paul A. Henry Sr.
Dover, NH - Paul A. Henry Sr., passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021.
Paul was born January 4th, 1931 in Brookline, Massachusetts to Arthur Snow Henry and Marie Beaufume Henry. Paul attended St. Mary of the Assumption School through high school. Paul began playing the trumpet in the 3rd grade and continued making music well into his 80's. In 1948 Paul attended Schillinger House of Music (now Berkley School of Music) on a full scholarship. He was then drafted into the Army in 1952 where he was assigned to the 43rd Infantry Division Band at the former Dachau Concentration Camp in Augsburg, Germany. In 1954 he was released from duty and returned to Brookline where he attended the Northeastern University engineering program. In 1955 Paul married his first wife, Iris Schofield. They had two children together and raised their family in Portsmouth. After 25 years they parted ways.
Paul went on to work as a civil engineer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he met Al Bratt, Tom Hodgins and Bobby Lima in the Officer's Club. They formed the band "Sentimental Journey" with the additions of Bill Muzzy and Jim Wick, and lived out some of their happiest days playing together. In 1985 while playing one evening in York Harbor, he met the future love of his life, Anne Stenmark. The band went out for drinks, and Anne sitting close by, complimented his drink. It was true love forever from that point on. They were married October 12th, 1986 and began their story as a true "Sentimental Journey." Paul welcomed Anne's children with open arms and supported all of his children throughout ups and downs. They moved as a family of 4 to Washington D.C. where he worked for NAVSEA in Crystal City, VA. Paul gave his full heart to his 2 children, 5 stepchildren, and 18 grandchildren.
In 1993 he retired and returned to New Hampshire where he and his wife Anne lived in Somersworth. Paul went on to work at Rose Steel Incorporated, a sister company of Novel Iron, where he worked another 14 years. In 2009 he and Anne spent their golden years at York Senior Housing Deerfield Estates, where they enjoyed playing the piano together, doing crossword puzzles, and going to The Ogunquit Playhouse. Music, friends, and family were their lives.
Paul is predeceased by his loving wife, Anne Lorraine Morse Henry, step-son Charles Shakelton, grandson Jonathan Gray, and sister Jackie Henry Boothroyd. He leaves behind his two children; Paul Henry Jr. & Kathleen Henry Nelson, step-children; Kathleen Shakelton Gray, SueAnn Shakelton Schofield, Andrew Stenmark, Paul Stenmark; a sister, Annette Henry Phenke, and a brother, Pierre Henry. He also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom Grampy (GG) Henry adored.
This incredible man lived a "Sentimental Journey" surrounded by friends and family, and left us in the same way.
A Graveside service will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 22, 2021 in the First Parish Cemetery, 180 York St., York, Maine.
