Margaret Ann Miller Hughes passed away in her sleep during the early morning hours on May 20, 2021, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 2pm at Smith Funeral Home with interment to follow at the Hughes' property in theBuckhorn Community. Family will greet friends on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 5~8pm at Smith Funeral Home in Newton, Texas.

Margaret was born to Ogden Miller and Zera Stephenson Miller on August 29, 1942, in Jasper, Texas. Margaret was an only child, raised in the Buckhorn community.

Margaret met the love of her life in Sunday School at the Bon Wier Baptist Church. She married James Edward Hughes Sr. on Saturday, May 26, 1962. Margaret and James had three sons during their 58 years of marriage; James (Jim) Jr., Scott, and Thom Hughes.

Margaret had a lifelong passion for music, particularly playing the piano. She enjoyed playing for the church and did so for as long as Parkinson's allowed her fingers to dance across the keys. Even in the last years of her life, she enjoyed playing in the nursing home and was able to play up until the last year of her life.

Margaret could be described as beautiful and sweet with a great sense of humor. She would tell others her greatest accomplishment was "raising my boys to see them grow up and do good things with their lives". Her boys kept Margaret on her knees for longer than any mother should have had to be.

Margaret had a servant's heart for the Lord and was devoted to spreading the gospel to others. She often did this in her own unique way. Margaret always carried gospel tracts with her when she traveled. If you ever went in a public restroom from Beaumont to Newton and saw a tract laying in the sink, Margaret had been there.

Throughout her life, Margaret was an active volunteer. She often drove Senior citizens from Newton to Beaumont for various doctor's appointments and also served as a "pink lady" volunteer at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

One of Margaret's favorite things to do was spoiling her five grandchildren; with trips to Dairy Queen and VHS movie rentals. She would often make her beloved grandchildren "blankets" on her shag carpet in the living and would let them enjoy their ice cream and cartoons. "Momma Hughes" as she was lovingly called, would then be sure they got their exercise by playing "tennis" with her grandchildren in the driveway in her blue denim skirt. She would hit the ball gently back and forth with them and end the day with her beef patties and cowboy stew.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband of 58 years, James Edwards Hughes, Sr.

She is survived by her three sons, James Edward (Jim) Hughes Jr. and his wife Rita, D. Scott Hughes and Thom Hughes. Grandchildren are Derrick Hughes and his wife Jennifer, Ashlye Hughes-Walker and her husband Thomas, Emilye Hughes-Smith and her husband Joshua, James Edward Hughes III, and his wife Brandy, and John Thomas Hughes. Great-grandchildren are Kadence Hughes, Ely Walker, Blair Walker, Holly Walker, and James Hughes IV with new baby sister Josie "on the way".

Margaret had a good life and is at peace and with the Lord. She fought the good fight and a valiant fight against a terrible disease, until her body finally gave out. She was tired but her spirit was ready, no more pain and struggling, and ready to be back with her love James.

Near the end and struggling with her Parkinson's, Margaret scribbled on a piece of paper... "don't worry about me, I am dancing with Jesus ~
