Sergeant Hewson and a Free French Officer, Colonel Jean Colonna d'Ornano, were the only fatal casualties in a Long Range Desert Group raid on a fort at Murzuk, Libya. Shot while standing to fix a jammed Vickers gun.They were initially buried side by side at Murzuk. Later buried at Tripoli. AWMM
His brother William Selwyn Hewson is buried in Aleppo War Cemetery, Syria.
