Retired Sergeant and HPROA Member David E Harrell passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2021, at the age of 76. He is a Veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He is survived by his wife, Brenda J. Harrell. He started his law enforcement career with the Los Angeles Police Department on October 6, 1968. He joined the Houston Police Department on February 2, 1970, Academy Class #43. During his tenure with the department, he was assigned to the Northwest, Vice, Burglary and Theft, Northeast, and Kingwood Divisions. Sergeant Harrell retired on March 12, 2005.

The body is entrusted with the Neptune Society, 2901 West Loop South, Suite 102, Houston, Texas 77027 (713) 766-6104.

David Earl Harrell, Sr., 76, left his loving family to be with the Lord on May 20, 2021. David was born on July 27, 1944 in Houston, Texas to William and Ruby Harrell. He attended M. B. Smiley High School and following graduation, he served his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1964 to 1968.

He attained the rank of Gunner's Mate III and received the following medals: Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

After Vietnam, he married the love of his life, Brenda Loftin Harrell on February 23, 1968 in Houston, Texas and then began his career in Law Enforcement. He first served with the LAPD from 1968- 1970. In 1970 he joined the Houston Police Department, serving until his retirement as a police sergeant in 2005.

David is preceded in death by his father, William P. Harrell and mother, Ruby Eleanor Harrell. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Brenda Harrell; his brother, Kenneth Harrell; his son , David E. Harrell, Jr. and his wife, Tammie Harrell; his daughters; Kimberley Adams and her husband, Corey Adams and Judy Wilson and her husband, Jeffrey Wilson; and grandchildren, Madison and Sean Adams, Jacob and Charlie Wilson, and Emma, Ava, and Joshua Harrell. David will be remembered as a faithful servant of the Lord.

He enjoyed serving his church as a greeter and making those around him feel welcome. His wife, children and grandchildren will remember him as a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather. He was 100% invested in their lives and never missed an opportunity to support and encourage them. He was always a jump in the sandbox, play on the floor kind of dad and Poppa, and he had zero reservations when it came to his family. Loving his family was always his priority, even in his death. His love for his wife, his children, and the Lord never wavered.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Mims Baptist Church on August 23rd at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Gideons in memory of David Harrell.
