Mexican Pilot, Radio Announcer and Businessman. Carlos Telésforo Camacho Espíritu is recognized for his wildlife conservation efforts and for being the founder of the African Safari conservation park in 1972. At 16 he crossed the border into the United States; however, he was captured by immigration agents in Los Angeles and repatriated to Nogales. He moved to Monterrey, where he began his career as a radio announcer. Later he again emigrated to Los Angeles, where he continued his career in radio. Once settled in the United States, he obtained his nationality and his career as a pilot, did his military service and obtained the rank of captain. He also became the founder of the 'Mayo' drug laboratories, a company that allowed him to generate a considerable fortune. Thanks to his earnings and his experience as a pilot, Camacho began traveling to Africa to capture exotic animals and take them to his residence in Valsequillo, Puebla. Realizing the attractiveness of his collection of animals, he decided to create a zoo in which animals could coexist and reproduce in conditions similar to their natural habitat. Africam Safari was born from that project on April 2, 1972. Captain Camacho died on October 28, 1976 from wounds caused by the claw of a Bengal tiger. A family got out of their car in the tiger area of the park, so the captain tried to control the animal, resulting in serious injuries; four months later, he died of complications from the attack.
