Civil War Union Naval Officer. He entered the United States Navy as a midshipman in 1804, and spent the next 58 years of his life in the Naval service. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1810, he served on board the "USS Constitution" under Commodore Isaac Hull during the War of 1812. When the "Constitution" defeated the British warship "HMS Guerriere" on August 19, 1812, he was detailed by Commodore Hull to board the English vessel to accept her surrender. Later in 1812 he was with Commodore Stephen Decatur when his ship captured the warship "HMS Macedonian". He was promoted to Commander in 1816, and served in the Mediterranean and off the coast of Africa. Promoted again in 1825, this time to Captain, he went to command the USS Constitution in 1826. In 1838 to 1839 he took part in retaliatory action against pirates and raiders who had preyed on American shipping in India. He commanded the Philadelphia Naval yard from 1849 to 1846, and contributed to the establishment of the United States Naval Academy. From 1846 to 1849 he commanded the African Squadron, and when the Civil War broke out in 1861, he was in charge of the Philadelphia Naval Asylum. His final promotion to Rear-Admiral came in in July 1862, just a month before his death.
