Joy had many happy memories of her childhood and, though she lived in many places, she was always a proud Texan like her father. A lifelong learner, she attended Texas State College for Women and in 1950, earned her Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University in her mother's home state of Illinois. While at Northwestern, she pledged to the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and met Jack Wallace Colt who she married on July 1, 1950. She was a loving mother to three boys and lived in many places during her marriage to Jack. She spent seven years in Mexico and became fluent in Spanish. She was divorced in September 1963.
Joy completed her Teaching Credential in Sonoma County, California and taught at Geyserville High School from 1963-67. She taught Spanish, French and laughingly she would tell you she even coached basketball at the small school. She taught in Thurston County from 1968-69 and again from 1986-95. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators.
Joy married Raymond Charles Evans on August 7, 1966 after a whirlwind romance. Those who knew them at the time said they never saw two people more in love. The couple and three boys moved from California to Washington in 1968. Ray and Joy bought a house south of Olympia where they lived until the time of her death.
Together, Joy and Ray had two daughters and shared their home with their grandson Josh.
Joy was a woman of strong faith who was dedicated to church activities at both Evergreen Christian Center and Hope Community Church in Olympia.
Joy was preceded in death by her beloved brother Harry and son Jon. She is forever in the hearts of her family; her loving husband Ray, her dear brother Paul, sons James (Marsh) and Jeff (Charlie) Colt, daughters Kathy (Kevin) Campbell and Susie (Todd) Mountin as well as 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Joy was a woman of principle and conviction. She found her great hope in Jesus and walked with Him in life and in death.
Joy had a warm and welcoming spirit, relentless love and endless generosity. She was kind and gentle, dependable and good, strong and sweet. She touched many lives and was much loved. Those who knew her are forever grateful.
