Nelson Wilson Jr. passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 2:30 pm while at Maury Regional Hospital in the ICU unit at the age of 75 in Columbia, Tennessee. Nelson was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 20, 1945 to Nelson Wilson Sr. and Nellie Wilson. He was 1 of 11 children.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 20,2021 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Burns Springs Church of Christ, 407 Smith St., Columbia, TN. 38401. Visitation will be Friday from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at Burns Springs Church of Christ with funeral services to follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment is at Polk Memorial Gardens. The family is requesting everyone to please Wear Mask.

Nelson became of student of the bible where he chose to teach, serve as a Deacon, and eventually preach the gospel. He dedicated himself to being a leader and friend, teaching, advocating, and counseling and supporting anyone he could.
Nelson married Donna Faye Whitmore on October 11, 1980. They loved, nurtured, and guided their two children into adulthood. Nelson and Donna worked together in various community projects and became two of the founders of the Alternative Outreach program.

After receiving his GED, Nelson went on to earn his BA degree in Theology from American Baptist College, Master's degree from Tennessee State University in Guidance and Counseling and a Doctor of Ministry from the Theological University of America. He became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. while a student at American Baptist College and received several academic awards and recognitions.
Nelson labored as the Minister of Burns Springs Church of Christ for 30 years until his death. Nelson referred to the members as his Burns Springs family as he loved each member.

Nelson's strong desire to make a difference, allowed him to work with many people from all aspects of life to include fellow ministers of the gospel, politicians, business, and civil rights leaders. Nelson spent some time helping organize activities such as the Freedom Ride Educational tours so that young people could be educated regarding their history and the struggles of the civil right leaders.

Nelson worked as an adjunct professor at TSU and Fisk University, and an administrator and professor at American Baptist College for many years. He traveled internationally to recruit students, fundraise, develop scholarship programs, teach, and preach the gospel. After leaving American Baptist College, he worked as a therapist at Family and Children Services where he retired.

Nelson had a strong desire for knowledge and always encouraged and supported others to work toward accomplishing their dreams through advancing their education. Nelson's main hobby was reading. He read all he could as often as he could.
Nelson is survived by his wife Donna Wilson, children, Deborah, Nicole DeClouet, Darrell Wilson; grandchildren, Jayden Rucker, Jaylan Rucker, Princeton Wilson, and Jordyn DeClouet; sisters, Betty Metellus and Lynn Wilson' brothers, Larry Wilson, Wendell Wilson, and Vinson Wilson; brother-in-law, Stephen Whitmore; sister-in-law, Doreen Ingle; nephews, Adrian King, Tyrone King and many other nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Nelson is preceded in death by his parents Nelson and Nellie Wilson; Aunt, Sadie Cooper; siblings, Ivory Lee Wilson, Charlesetta Miller, Frank Wilson, Ambrose Wilson, and Anthony Wilson and many other family members and his dear friend, Christian Pal and fellow Minister of the Gospel, Maurice Conner.
