William "Bill" D. Tyler, 81, of Charleston, passed away May 13, 2021 at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

June Bug, as he was called by family and friends, was born November 5, 1939 in Charleston to the late William and Evelyn Tyler.

Bill was educated in Kanawha County where he attended both Garnet and Charleston High Schools. He was a 1958 graduate of Charleston High School and went on to enlist in the Army. During his time of service, he spent time in Germany and liked to tell stories and speak a few German words.

He was employed at OJ Morrison's Department Store, the Department of Highways and finally was hired at FMC. It was a job where he forged many friendships, which lasted even after his retirement.

In his early years, Bill was a member of the Kool Kats, a local band that was well known for their brand of popular music. He loved playing the guitar long after his band days. He was proud of his collection of guitars and would play for hours just walking the floor. He eventually would go on to play his guitar at church.

Along with playing his guitar, Bill loved to woodwork and garden. He built everything from doll houses to dog houses and then some. You could see his handy work throughout the house. His garden always yielded an abundance of tomatoes and cucumbers that he would gladly share, especially, those green tomatoes which were in high demand.

Bill was known to some as "June bug", to others as "Pops", and to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Paw Paw". He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bill's special grandson and first-born grandchild was Malik and they shared many adventures. They could be seen together on their frequent trips to the local convenient stores, Burger King, and wherever else Malik wanted to go. They even had an outing at Hooters (you can only imagine). They had a unique bond even as both grew older, they still have that something special. Paw Paw loved seeing his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his adopted grandchildren who would come to the house and hang out. You could hear them calling him "Pops" or "Paw Paw" as he would be chopping it up with them. Bill always had hard candy and bubble gum for himself and for the great-grandchildren who knew where to go to get a handful.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Carmen Tyler; and brother, Clyde Tyler, Sr.

Bill is survived by his wife, Greta Tyler of Charleston; bothers, Warren Tyler (Yolonda) and Theodore Tyler of Charleston; sisters, Carol Martin and Ella Wansley of NY; children, Monica Ashford of Charleston, Brian Tyler of Indianapolis, IN, Melvin Ashford of Cleveland, OH, Nita Witten (Ahmed) of Dunbar, and Michelle Dunlap of Charleston; grandchildren; Malik Witten, Maliha Witten "Boss Lady", Brian Tyler, Jr., Martinas "JoJo" Tyler, Brianna Tyler, Nasira Morris, Jayson Morris-Dunlap; several great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

"Pops" was an organ donor and because of him, someone has a second chance at a meaningful life.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar with Rev. Curtis Calloway officiating.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
