Kate Dunkley Farnes Bower was born July 15, 1912, in the small farming community of Whitney, ID. She was the fourth of seven children born to William Job and Annie Laura Lowe Dunkley. She attended school in Whitney and during high school apprenticed in cosmetology, later attending Utah State Agricultural College.
In 1930 she was sealed to her high school sweetheart, Lawrence Merlin Farnes, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they began life's great adventure. They were honest, hard working, and blessed to be very successful in their business endeavors. Kate was the first lady butcher in the state of Idaho. They were involved in the grocery and meat business, a sawmill in northern Canada, car dealerships, radio stations, real estate developments and many other interesting investments. They lived and raised their family in Blackfoot, Idaho and Fort St. James, BC, Canada. After retirement Kate and Merlin spent their winters in Mesa, AZ.
Always willing to serve her Heavenly Father, Kate used her incredible talents to further His work. She worked in auxiliaries of the church and after her husband's death in 1985, Kate served honorably in both the Arizona and England missions, and for years served as an ordinance worker in the Arizona temple. She loved temple work and went often. Kate and Merlin were blessed financially and for their generosity received the Presidential award from BYU and Ricks College. Together they provided numerous scholarships and financial aid for missionaries. In 1992 Kate met and married Wayne Bower. They resided in Portland and Arizona and had seven wonderful years together.
