John Wesley Buckner was born in Marion County, GA. Between 1850-52 he emigrated by wagon to Union County, Arkansas, where he married his first wife, Nancy Henry. They are living in the household of William Henry, his father-in-law in Union County, Arkansas in 1860. He served on the Confederate side of the Civil War in Company I 28th Louisiana Infantry, signing up along with several relatives and neighbors in Monroe, Louisiana. John lost 2 brothers, Ebba and William, during the War, as well as his wife Nancy and brother-in-law, George A Henry. He then married his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Britton Henry Gathright, who had also been widowed in the War. He appears in the 1870 and 1880 census' in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana.
Children w/ Nancy: Susan Malissa "Sudie" Buckner Lewis, William Meredith Buckner, and Nancy Elizabeth "Bettie" Buckner Lewis. (These 3 siblings all married 3 Lewis siblings.) Children with Elizabeth: George Wesley Buckner, Charles Britton Buckner, Lillia Buckner, and Joseph Henry Buckner.
Although Confederate pension records indicate his date of death as January 15, 1880, he appears in the 1880 census dated June 1, 1880.
