Born at Berlin [Kitchener], Ontario on 8 July 1873, son of Isaac E. Shantz and Magdalena Eby, he attended the Berlin Collegiate Institute then worked with his father in foundry and machine work until 1910 when, following his father's death, the business was closed and, the next year, he moved to Winnipeg and went into the real estate business in association with J. S. Menzies. His firm handled land transactions in Crescentwood, Tuxedo Park, River Heights, and Kings Park. On 8 August 1899, at Berlin, he was married to Olivia Bingeman. They had two children: Dorothy Magdalena Shantz and Wilfred B. Shantz.
