Darlene E. Allen's Life Story Born: March 3, 1928 Passed away: May 16, 2021
Darlene Allen was both on March 3, 1928, in Nekoma, Kansas, as the youngest of three girls. She was born at home in a snowstorm, and was delivered by her aunt who was an RN. She always said it was good her Aunt was there, because the doctor could't make it through the storm!!

When Darlene was three, her mother (Laura H. Mohr Schmidt, memorial 59940092) passed away and she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Jake and Eva Simon, who lived in Boulder, Colorado. She was raised as an only child and had a wonderful childhood. She attended Boulder High School.

She met her future husband, Gene M. Allen, at a roller rink on Iris Street in Boulder. They were both 16 years old, and Gene was a floor manager. Darlene and Gene skated the first time they met, and they immediately hit it off. He remembered her as a wonderful skater and she was attracted to his good looks. They married on Thanksgiving Day in 1946.

They have two children who survive them, Susan Diane Bowick Boice, and Gene Michael Allen. The family moved throughout Colorado, as Gene's career required. They moved 31 times as Gene advanced his career as a very prominent figure as a city planner and town manager, Darlene was a stay at home mother until 1964, when she went back to school and acquired her Licensed Practical Nurse degree, a career she worked in for 25 years.

The couple had been married 70 years when Gene passed away win 2017. They were active in the Seventh Day Adventist church. Their love for camping, road trips and spending time with friends and family were the highlights of their life together.

Darlene's advice for a long life: stay active, be involved and interested, church, nourishing food, having fun and working hard.
