Larry G. Mattern, age 74, of Orchard, Neb., passed away, surrounded by his family, Sunday, January 8, 2012, at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev., after a 10 year battle with cancer.

Larry was born July 10, 1937, in Yankton, S.D. to Edwin and Ilene (Larson) Mattern. Larry lived in Gayville, S.D. until the age of eight. Then his family moved to Basset, Neb., where he grew up living on several different ranches. In 1955, Larry graduated from Rock County High School. The summer after his graduation, Larry became a lineman for Lincoln Electric. Later, Larry worked for REA in Martin, S.D.

On December 7, 1957, Larry married Mona Noreita Grosse at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre, Neb. In 1958, Larry began working for Consumers Public Power District, now Nebraska Public Power District, on the traveling construction crew out of Norfolk, Neb. In 1960, he transferred into Norfolk on the line crew. In 1970, Larry transferred to Orchard, Neb. as a local manager for NPPD and remained there until retiring, on December 31, 1996.

Since retiring, Larry and his wife, Mona, have enjoyed spending their winters in Bullhead City, Ariz. Larry enjoyed golfing, playing pool, telling stories, bee keeping, fishing, and being with family and friends. Larry was a member of the Moose Lodge 1860 of Bullhead City.

Larry will be truly missed by all that knew him.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, his wife's parents, two sisters-in-law, and a brother-in-law.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mona Mattern, and five children: three sons, Greg and wife Shari of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steve and wife Cindy of Plainview, Neb., and Kevin and wife Loretta of Dell Rapids, S.D., and two daughters, Kimberly Peterson and husband Dave and Terra Moore and husband Mike all of Fort Collins, Colo. He is also survived by his mother, Ilene Mattern of Fremont, Calif., one sister, Suzanne Young and husband Terry of Palo Verde Estates, Calif., and three brothers, Bob and wife Sheila of San Jose, Calif., Tom and wife Darlene of Banger, Calif., and Rodger and wife Sharon of Pleasanton, Calif. In addition, Larry is survived by two brothers-in-law, Randy Grosse and wife Pam of Omaha, Neb., and LeRoy Henry and wife Linda of Council Bluffs, Iowa, a sister-in-law, Jan Grosse of Norfolk, Neb., and many nieces and nephews. Larry also leaves behind a legacy of 15 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.

There will be no services, as were the wishes of the deceased.

An inurnment for the family will be at a later date.
