In 1976 John and Frances were married in Glasgow and in 1980 their son Jay was born. John worked as an educational psychologist in Glasgow until 1981 when he came to South Carolina with his wife and son. Here he worked for twenty-five years as a mental health counselor at the Columbia Area Mental Health Center until his retirement in October 2008. His professional life was of great importance to him and he valued the friendships he made as a therapist on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
John played rugby all through his school days, and growing up on the River Thames he filled his childhood spare time with fishing and exploring the countryside. He passed his love of the water, outdoors and sports, especially British football, to his son Jay. John's father's interest in gardening also became a constant pleasure for John. He was a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church.
John exemplified a life of concern, empathy and compassion for others and will be missed by so many who knew him. Surviving are his wife Frances, son John Means A'Hern and his wife Meredith Martin A'Hern and John's sister Susan McManus, her husband Francis McManus and their three children Joseph, John, and Sorcha, who live in Dublin, Ireland. Columbia family members also include Beverley Means and her husband Edward Roberts and their children Kathryn, John, and Beverley.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 27 at 10 a.m. in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday 7-9 p.m. at the Roberts' home at 8 Woodhill Circle, 29209. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
