Civil War Veteran Co H 10th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.
Captured in September 1863.
He was a prisoner in Richmond, Denville, Andersonville and Florence when he escaped.
He was discharged in April 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin.Born in Devonshire, England to Richard Northcott and Hannah Hanns Braund Northcott. He was the brother of Robert, Thomas, John, Betsy Ann , Mary Jane, Hannah, Charlotte, William and James.
He came to the United States 1850 with his parents and siblings. James L. the youngest was born in Racine, Wi. They came to New Lisbon a year or so later.

He enlisted 16 Sept 1861, New Lisbon, Juneau, Wisconsin. He entered the military for the Civil War, Private, in 1961, fought and was captured, escaped and returned to Union lines. Mustered out on 03 Nov 1864.

He married Hester Whitcher, in 1866. They had four children :Herbert James, Lewis W, Ellen Leona and Daniel Whitcher Northcott. By 1900 they had moved to Minnesota.

Biography:Following is the obituary for RICHARD NORTHCOTT: Richard Northcott enlisted in 1861 in the 10th Wisconsin Infantry, Company H and saw much severe fighting. In the Battle of chicamauga- September 21st, 1863 he was taken prisoner and sent to the dread prison of Andersonville. He was there for 11 months or until General Sherman made his famous march to the sea. When the prisoners were being removed from the prison, Mr Northcott escaped and finally made his way to the Union lines where he was cared for as well as was possible. Richard Northcott was born in England in 1840 and came to this country when but a young man. In 1861 he enlisted in Company H, 10th Wisconsin Infantry and took part in many battles of the Civil War until captured at Chicamauga September 21st, 1863. He escaped from the Andersonville prison 11 months later.
He was mustered into the Grand Army of the Republic, Overton Post, November 27, 1885. For many years Mr Northcott lived with his family on a farm in Stevens township, Stevens County(Minnesota) until they moved to Morris(MN) about 1903. Here they lived until only a few year ago, when they moved to Aitken, Minn., where he died on the afternoon of May 9th.(1923) The funeral was held from the Methodist Episcopal Church in Aitken Saturday afternoon. Four sons, L W Northcott of North Yakima, Washington, Herbert Northcott of Saskatchewan, Canada, Daniel Northcott of Red Wing(MN), a married daughter, Ella and Mrs Richard Northcott are left to mourn his death.
