A remembrance service will be held in the Westby Observatory at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, 12718 10th Street N.E., Spicer, MN at 1 pm Monday, October 15th.
Shirley Mae Hanley was born September 17, 1926 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Frances and Leon Hanley. She was raised and educated in St. Paul. On April 21, 1945 she married Robert John (R.J.) Buckley in Hastings, Nebraska and moved to Redwood Falls where she raised five children. In 1976 she moved to Spicer and worked as a counselor at Willmar Regional Treatment Center for many years until her retirement in 1994.
Shirley's passions included gardening, animal rights, cooking, antiquing and the love of nature. She was a feisty and fiercely independent woman who spoke her mind and stood up for both her beliefs and the rights of the creatures she protected. An avid wolf, deer and wildlife activist, she could be found feeding the deer and the birds around her home - even in the most inclement weather. She championed the cause of the Gray Wolf of Northern Minnesota and was an active member of the Wolf Center in Ely. It was Shirley's wish that any memorials be dedicated to the Wolf Center.
She is survived by two sons: David (and Barbara) Buckley and Tom (and Laurie) Buckley, two daughters: Laura (and Danny Commerford) Buckley, and Julie (and Gerry Mansell) Buckley Mansell, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, three brothers, Bob (and Eileen) Hanley, Jerry (and Marianne) Hanley, Leon aka: Skip (and Wannetta) Hanley, one sister, Betty Sutton, and her beloved cat, Jade.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Pamela, mother Frances and husband R.J.
