Sgt. Daniel J. Shaw of West Seneca, N.Y., was a determined young man who was always smiling and had lots of friends. He was supposed to be home from Iraq in September, but his tour was extended. He had been stationed in Iraq since October 2006 and had planned to make a career out of the Army. He was awarded a Purple Heart in 2005 after an insurgent attack left him with shrapnel in the back of his head. Daniel later returned to active duty in Ramadi, just north of Baghdad, where he was finishing out his year-long stay. He had planned to spend Christmas with his girlfriend's family in Colorado. He was expecting to come home around Christmas, and was planning to move back to WNY with his girlfriend who lives in Colorado. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Iraqi Campaign Medal. He died in Taji, Iraq at age 23. Lombardo Funeral Home
