Louis C. Thompson, age 99, formerly of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 4, 2021 in the Atlanta area. He was a sweet, brave, remarkable, brilliant, Christian man. Louis was a WWII veteran and survived maleria with a 113 degree fever, dysentery, and survived 2 crash landings in Burma. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross four times, the Army Air Corp medal five times and many more honors. After returning to the US, Louis attended and graduated from the University of Florida in mechanical engineering and worked for NASA in Huntsville until his retirement. During his NASA career he worked in many space programs beginning with the Mercury and Saturn programs continuing through many shuttle programs. Louis helped put a man on the moon during his career at NASA. Louis was also an Eagle Scout, was awarded the Wood Badge, and was involved with leading and traing Boy Scouts for more than 30 plus years. At the age of 90 he was still traveling the world and enjoying life. Louis had a daily routine of doing 100 military push-ups. At the age of 97 he was the most decorated WWII veteran in the State of Georgia and led the pledge of allegiance at Governor Kemp's inauguration. He was a faithful member of Midway United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, GA. Louis had also taught Sunday school at Monte Sano United Methodist Church for many years. He loved the Lord and lead a blessed life full of love, and will greatly missed by all who knew him. Louis was 3 months shy of his 100th birthday when he passed away. He is survived by sister Grace Miller of Carrollton, GA, brother David Thompson of Paso Robles, CA, daughter Linda Scott (Jack) of Dawsonville, GA, daughter Peggy Harker (David) of Milton, GA, and son Dan (Sherry) of Franklin, TN, and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by wife Evelyn and brothers Harold and James, and his parents. A memorial ceremony was held on May 8, 2021 at Midway United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, GA. The burial ceremony will be held on May 13, 2021 at the National Cementary in Canton, GA. Donations can be made in Louis' name to Midway United Methodist Church, 5025 Atlanta Highway, Alpharetta, GA 30004. All funds will be directed to the local chapter of the Boy Scouts.
