Obituary of J. Madison Fitzgerald
as written in "The Camilla Enterprise" dated 7 Sep 1923.

Many relatives and friends in this county were saddened by the death of Mr. J.
Madison Fitzgerald, which took place at an early hour Tuesday Morning, 4 Sep 1923.
Mr. Fitzgerald had been quite feeble for a long time and the slender strand of life,
disturbed by slight additional pressure of illness, broke and set the weary spirit free. His
death came so quickly and quietly that not many of his friends learned the news until
several hours afterward. Funeral services were held at the McNair Hotel Tuesday, 4 Sep
1923, afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Jas. D. Deans and Rev. J. H. House.
Sorrowing relatives and friends followed the remains to Oakview cemetery, where they
were tenderly laid to rest beside those gone on before to their reward. There was no man
more widely known in the county than Mr. Fitzgerald, for he had been a resident of this
county for a long number of years and was connected by ties of family relationship to a
number of people throughout the county. He was the son of David Fitzgerald and Nancy
Hilliard Fitzgerald. Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Stewart County in 1845 and had reached
his 78th milestone in life when the end came. He was just a young stripling lad when the
Civil War came on, but in the enthusiasm of youth he enlisted in the Army of the
Confederacy and fought valiantly through that memorable four years struggle. His death
removes one more of the fast fading line of gray which connect the youth of today with
the realities of war now fast becoming only a memory. After the war Mr. Fitzgerald
married Mrs. Georgia Ramey and was a resident of Camilla the remainder of his life. His
wife preceded him to the grave about eighteen years ago. Mr. Fitzgerald possessed the
kindly friendship and regard of all who knew him and when he passed over the river of
death there was left a feeling of sadness and regret among his many friends at his passing.
The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. R. F. Griffin, of Savannah and a step-
daughter, Mrs. Ada Ramey Gunter, of Montgomery, Ala. He also leaves one brother, Mr.
E. T. Fitzgerald, of this county and several half brothers and sisters, a large number of
nieces and nephews and other near relatives. A sister and brother, Mrs. Elizabeth
Culpepper and Mr. Butler Fitzgerald, preceded him to the grave several years before.
