Robert Arvid "Bob" Johnson, the son of Swedish immigrants, Arvid and Ebba (Asvard) Johnson, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2021, in his apartment at The Meadows Assisted Living in Manchester, one day short of his 96th birthday.
Bob was born on a farm in Milo Township south of Manchester on May 14, 1925, and attended rural schools in Prairie Township near Winthrop, graduating from Winthrop High School in 1942.
His family then bought a farm near Edgewood where he worked until he enlisted in the United States Army at the end of WWII.
He married the love of his life, Lois Irene Sherman, of Edgewood, in 1946 and they began life together in the Carolinas where he was stationed with the Fifth Corps. Bob always said he had the best, most rewarding duty as he was in charge of making sure soldiers returning home from overseas got their back pay before being discharged.
Following his own honorable discharge from military service, Bob worked as a hired man on a farm near Delhi, and in 1950 he and Lois moved to a rented farm in Richland Township which they eventually purchased and operated until retiring in 1988. Bob also served as a sales representative for Pioneer Seed Company for many years.
After selling the farm, he and Lois enjoyed retired life in a home in Manchester, moving to The Meadows in 2017.
Bob enjoyed bowling, golf, dancing, playing cards, people in general, and maintaining contact with his relatives in Sweden, traveling there three times for family reunions. He was fluent in Swedish, having learned the language as a boy at home.
He was an active, longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Manchester where he served in many capacities.
Bob served on the Dundee School Board, and helped guide formation of the West Delaware Community School District, serving on its board for a number of years.
He was chairman of the Delaware County Memorial Hospital Foundation and held many other leadership positions in community organizations.
Surviving to mourn his loss are his children, Art (Jackie) Johnson of Edgewood, Carl (Jeannine) Johnson of Wellman, Karen (Ray) Thomas of Bothell, Washington, Lynn (Cathy) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, and Roger (Michele) Johnson of Pleasant Hill; ten grandchildren, Adrian, Kristen, Sara, Annie-Lie, Misty, Joel, Seth, Rob, Beth, and Bryan; seven great-grandchildren, Dayce, Sienna, Mila, Morgan, Adeline, Samantha, and Osten; a brother-in-law, Duane (Joan) Sherman; many nieces and nephews; his family of friends at The Meadows; and several cousins in Sweden.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Lois; a brother, Bengt (Marietta) Johnson; a sister, Alice (Dick) Bogue; and an infant granddaughter, Amy Johnson.
The family expresses its thanks to all the angels at Regional Medical Center for the compassionate care they provided in Bob's last days, and to St. Croix Hospice, and Jodi Delaney of Helping Hands agency for the loving care given to Bob and for assisting the family as they dealt with his last hours. The family also thanks the outstanding staff at The Meadows for the loving care provided during his four- year residence there. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
