Richard A. Hurst, 69, a longtime resident of Acton and beloved husband and father, died in the comfort of his home with his family and black Lab Tucka by his side, on December 27, 2020.
Richard was born on April 6, 1951 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of John V. and Beatrice M. (Chellis) Hurst. Following high school, Rick joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1969 – 1971 during the Vietnam Conflict.
Rick married his soulmate and adventurous partner Susan Rae Gladden and they have shared 47 years together. From 1972 – 1976 both He and Susan traveled around the United States. Often camping and working along the way. Rick especially liked lots of snow and cold weather for their winter camping excursions. In his younger years Rick loved to fish and looked forward each year of hunting for deer and moose. He also was a boy scouts' leader in Newfield (with a motley crew!) and ran on Acton Rescue Squad as an EMT. Rick was a first aid instructor and had the "patience of a saint" with new students. On one of their traveling adventures, they met a woman who had a season pass to the Bronco Football Team. Sue would stay home, and Rick would enjoy the game with unlimited food and complimentary beverages!
Rick worked as a metal fabricator but his knowledge of welding, woodworking and building a new part from starch became his trademark. Even his friends and in-laws would call Rick to come do a home project over their own husbands – they knew it would be done right the first time around. He possessed a great thirst for knowledge, was well read and had an eclectic taste in antiques, religions icons and paintings. He and Sue were great yard sale fans and attended many auctions in the area. They were happy to take car rides in the country and being home with their animals. Simple pleasures in life.
Rick's talents, sense of adventure and quiet intellect will be greatly missed. He loved unconditionally and has now found peace.

Rick is lovingly survived by his wife of 47 years, Susan Hurst of Acton; his mother Beatrice Ramsell of Waterboro; his stepson John Parot of Hyde Park, VT; his siblings Sandra and Buster Conklin of Oak Harbor, Washington State; Hazel and Len Vangaasbeek of Hollis; Frank and Tracy Ramsell of Springfield, MA; Cindy, James, Rhonda Harlan, and Mark Hurst all of VT; also, three granddaughters and one great grandson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister Regina.
A Graveside Service with military honors will be held later in the spring at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery.
