Academy Award Winning Sound Engineer, Producer. A native of New York City, Garity was a key figure in the invention and development of one of the earliest stereophonic sound systems, known as "Fantasound." It was developed for Walt Disney's classic animated film, "Fantasia" (1940). In 1942 Garity, together with Disney and sound engineer J. N. A. Hawkins, shared an Honorary Academy Award "For their outstanding contribution to the advancement of the use of sound in motion pictures through the production of Fantasia." Garity's other credits as a sound engineer include the films, "Firebrand Jordan" (1930), "Beyond The Rio Grande" (1930), and "Ridin' Law" (1930). He also worked as a technical director and production supervisor for several Woody Woodpecker theatrical and TV cartoons during the 1950s. His later years were spent as a production manager and vice president of Walter Lantz Studios. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the United States Navy.
