George is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Dorothy. He is also remembered with love by his 'kids', Del and Greg Walters, and Bruce, Jerry, Terry and Jan Frates. George was blessed with 11 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his siblings Jack and Carol Berg.
George was born on March 2, 1931, in Paris, Texas, to Aubrey Alvis and Elizabeth Lydia (Carmack) Walters. George attended Allen Military Academy in Bryan, Texas, and completed OCS training at Ft. Benning, Ga. He then served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry. George saw active duty in the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Upon discharging from the Army, George settled in California, where he would soon find his career in law enforcement. After working briefly with the San Benito County Sheriff's Office, he joined the California Highway Patrol in 1956. He spent several years stationed in King City and then with the Salinas/Monterey Unit. Upon his retirement in 1985, George and Dorothy continued to make Salinas their home.
Throughout his long life, George maintained interests in subjects such as astronomy, geology and genealogy. He was also an avid photographer and gardener. He loved traveling, cooking, and enjoying a glass of good wine with his family and friends.
While he is no longer with us, George will long be remembered for his kind nature, his genial sense of humor, and life of dedicated service.
