George Thomas, a fishmonger and member of the Southampton Football and Athletic Company Limited, was instrumental in developing The Dell, he secured the land and immediately went to work constructing the new ground, purchasing materials and hiring contractors. It cost somewhere in the region of £10,000 to complete but by September 1898, the Southern League champions were ready to move into their new home.
In 1905 he became Director of newly formed Chelsea FC utilising his vast experience in establishing Chelsea in the football league.
