He married Dorothy Bernice Wood in Seminole, Oklahoma, in 1945, after having served in the US Army during WWII. He had fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was taken prisoner by the German army. He was always known by Dorothy and his friends as Bert or Al.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years, Dorothy, and his younger brother James.
Bert is survived by his sister Mary Lou, his son Glenn and wife Cindy, and his daughter Marilyn Sue. Bert had five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Bert began his working career with Tidewater Pipeline, which became Getty Oil Company and later Texaco, from which he retired in 1985.
Bert was active for many years in the Crane Little League, being the official statistician for hundreds of boys who played baseball in the 1950's and 1960's. Bert served on the School Board of the Crane Independent School District during the 1960's, and was deeply involved with the momentous decision to end segregation and fully integrate the public school system. Bert loved to play golf and was proud of recording two hole-in-one's – the first on the day of J. Paul Getty's funeral – when every Getty Oil employee was given the day off – and he played golf that day to honor his boss. Following WWII, Bert helped support his widowed mother, Edna, supporting many of her needs as she raised his younger sister, Mary Lou, and little brother, Jim. Following his retirement, Bert and Dorothy spent many years with the wander lust of the travel trailer and RV community, crisscrossing the country, but they would never travel to see the Rocky Mountains on account of Dorothy's heart condition. Bert developed many friendships all over the country, particularly in the Texas Rio Grande Valley, as he and Dorothy would winter there for many years with the so called "snow birds."
