MAE GORE RHOADES, 93, of Duncan, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, in Duncan.
Funeral is at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel in Duncan, with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Interment will be at Duncan Cemetery.
Mae was born in 1914 on a farm near DeQueen in Sevier County, Arkansas, to Perry Andrew Gore and Ozella Lamb Gore. She moved with her family to Walters in 1929.
She married Cecil A. Rhoades, who preceded her in death in 1995. They lived on a farm in the Stringtown Community of Cotton County until they moved to Kermit, Texas, in January of 1946, and then later that same year to Duncan.
For most of their lives, Mae and Cecil had a huge garden and canned many vegetables to share with family and neighbors. She was an excellent cook and liked to serve "farm hand" meals with a loaded table. She loved gardening, flowers and working in her yard. She mowed her own yard until she was in her 90s.
Mae was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church and loved attending Sunday School class with her friends. She also enjoyed the annual Gore Family Reunion in DeQueen, Ark., and visiting with her many relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and three sisters. She was also preceded in death by three half-sisters and four half-brothers.
Survivors include two sons, George Rhoades and wife Lynn of Duncan, and Robert Rhoades and wife Virginia of Athens, Ga.; two grand-children, Danila Rhoades of Athens, and Tristan Rhoades of Portland, Ore.; one step-granddaughter, Natasha Duering of Athens; and many nieces and nephews.
