Roberta Mae "Bert" (nee Thiesen) Simmons, 72, was born on July 12, 1948 to Robert Thomas Thiesen and Berdeene Faye (nee Drake) Thiesen. She grew up on the family farm north of Dysart, Iowa and was in the last class to graduate from Geneseo Consolidated High School in 1966.
After high school, Bert attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, in Des Moines, Iowa where she graduated in 1969. She was excited to serve on the committee which planned the 50-year reunion for the class of nurses in 2019.
On April 15, 1972, Roberta married Myrlen Simmons in West Des Moines, Iowa. The couple lived in the house they built in Ogden, Iowa and later moved to Panora, Iowa.
Bert started her nursing career as a OBGYN nurse at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines and Boone (Iowa) Hospitals. Later, she enjoyed many years as a public health nurse for Dallas County, Iowa. Bert spent the last part of her career as a hospice nurse working for Mercy Hospice. Additionally, she was elected to the Guthrie County Hospital Board of Trustees where she served for 14 years.
Bert enjoyed reading, family reunions, and working on genealogy. Many family vacations included trips to cemeteries, court houses, and libraries in search of distant relatives.
Bert passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 and will be greatly missed by her husband Myrlen Simmons of Panora, her son Gregory and his wife Terri of Dallas Center, Iowa and many family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Wallace (Wally).
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Twigg Funeral Home, Panora, Iowa. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
