Obituary
HUBER, Joseph Sr., February 29, 1916, Hillsboro Journal newspaper, Pub. Hillsboro, IL Pg. 1

Joseph Huber, Sr., a highly respected German who was one of the pioneers of this section passed away at his home in Hillsboro, IL Saturday morning. His last act was one of devotion and worship to his Lord and Master. Although weakened by illness and old age, he succeeded by a great effort to make the sign of the Cross just before he passed to his reqard, his bedside surrounded by his seven surviving children. His aged wife, who has been totally blind for the past nine years and is dangerously low, lay near him with the thought that he must be breathing easier when she did not hear his voice because he had gone.

The funeral services were held at St. Agnes Catholic church in Hillsboro and interment was made at St. Agnes Catholic cemetery. A large number of relatives and friends attended the services which were held by Father Thomas Masterson, assisted by Fr. Johannes of Nokomis, IL and Fr. Carroll of Litchfield, IL.

Joseph Huber, Sr. was born in Baden, Germany on April 20, 1838 and was therefore aged 79 years, 10 months and 7 days at the time of his death on February 26, 1916. He was the son of Ignatius Huber and Theresa [Ponder] Huber.

In 1848, the Huber family came to America, and settled in Perry County, MO. He was married to Frances Ernst in Perryville, MO, on January 6, 1859. To this union were born nine children, two of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his widow and the following sons and daughters; Godfrey, Joseph. Jr., and Henry, of East Fork Township, George Ignatius of Hillsboro, IL; Theresa, wife of Jos. Schwartz of Arkansas City, KS; Barbara, wife of Joseph Benny, of Hillsboro, and Mrs. Ellen Feraris, widow of Vincent. F. Feraris of Hillsboro, IL. There are twenty-eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Mr. Huber brought his family to Montgomery County in the fall of 1867, with his brother Xavier Huber, and the two purchased farms in East Fork township, about seven miles east of Hillsboro where he lives until fourteen years ago, when he moved to Hillsboro. By industry and frugality, he succeeded in building up a nice estate. Xavier Huber died thirty-three years ago and left a family of eight children, seven of whom are now living and are all prominent residents of this county.
