Sergeant 1st Class Walls, the son of Jimmie Charles Walls and Patsy H. (Gray) Johnson, grew up in Bremerton, Washington, where he was a 1985 graduate of Bremerton High School. He served for 22 years in the United States Army, enlisting in September 1985. He did tours of duty all across the globe, his career varied with duties such as a field artillery specialist, moving on to a gunnery sergeant, and drill instructor and he completed his associates' degree from Central Texas College in 2006. He served in Desert Storm, in Iraq from April 2003-March 2004 and was currently on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, arriving there in April 2007. Johnny died in Uruzgan, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire during combat operations. He was a cannon crew member serving on a transition team. Transition teams serve as advisers to the Afghanistan military and police. He was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Riley, Kansas. Johnny was known for his quiet strength and sense of humor. Surviving are his wife Alene Walls, and step son Brent Fitts of Lawton, Oklahoma, sons Alex and Bradley Walls of Waterstown, New York, mother and step-father Roger and Patsy Johnson of Port Orchard, Wshington, brother Harvey Walls and wife Donna of Salem, Oregon, sister Roxana Browning and husband Scott of Port Orchard, Washington, and grandparents JC and Florene Walls of Port Orchard, Washington, and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie C. Walls and and his maternal grandparents, Hubert C. Gray and Julia McCuller Gray.
