Donald C. Hughes, a longtime resident of Medford, passed away in his home on Wed, May 5th, with his loving family by his side. Donald was born in Boston April 20, 1935 to C. Walter and Reta (Dunbrack) Hughes. He was raised in Allston and Arlington and graduated from Brighton High School with the Class of 1953. He then attended Northeastern University where he joined the ROTC and received his Bachelor Degree in Business Management. After graduation, he deployed to Colorado Springs as an officer for 2½ years. After this commitment, he returned to the Boston area to marry his college sweetheart, Patricia Hanley. They settled in Malden and were surprised to have him recalled by the Army to be stationed in Orleans, France where their daughter Ann Marie was born. Soon after, he deployed to Vietnam for one year, and his family returned to Medford. His next assignment was Fort Lewis, in Tacoma, WA, where their son Paul was born, and Don was soon re-deployed to Vietnam for another year. Following this he was sent to Germany for three years where his family accompanied him. The European assignments gave them the opportunity to travel, go camping across Europe and meet people, enjoying the local color and cuisine. As the Vietnam era ended, the Reduction in Forces forced senior officers out of the Army. After leaving the service for the second time he returned to the Boston area and began his career in the US Postal service.

Don was a gourmet cook and explored preparing ethnic cuisine and entertaining family and friends. Most recently he enjoyed fixing up the backyard with the guidance of the next-door neighbors and setting up a large tent so they could enjoy summer family meals and get-togethers in the yard. Don also liked puttering around the house and maintaining the family property on Cape Cod. In his spare time, he read mysteries, historical literature and also enjoyed being outdoors.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia (Hanley) Hughes, his children, Ann Marie Campagna and husband Frank of Stoneham, and Paul C. Hughes and wife Tonya of Everett, his brother John Hughes of Billerica, and his grandchildren, Logan, Danni Marie, and Nicholas and several nieces and nephews.
