Dave Lawton was born March 2, 1931 in Laramie, Wyoming. The only child to Jerry and Louise Lawton. They moved to Colorado where Jerry managed The Chalets and Stanley Hotels in Estes Park. As a young boy, Dave spent many hours attending school and playing in and around Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park where he returned in his later years.

The family moved to Denver where Dave attended Gove Jr. High and East High School. During this time he became Master Councilor of DeMolay. Dave attended the University of Denver where he received a Bachelors' Degree in Advertising and Business. After graduating, he stayed in close touch with many of his friends in his Kappa Sigma Fraternity and East High School.

Dave went on to join the Air Force where he became a pilot. During his service he was stationed in Oklahoma, Germany, France, Illinois, Alabama, Texas, California, Vietnam and Colorado. Dave received several medals from his time in Vietnam, most notably, the Bronze Star given for his flying skills during evacuations of jungle outposts during the Tet Offensive. He returned from Vietnam in 1969 and then went to the University of Colorado where he received a Masters Degree through the Air Force AFIT program. The Air Force then assigned him to their Accounting and Finance Center in Denver where he retired in 1974.

In 1955 Dave married Nancy Ann Brown, also of Denver. They divorced after 40 years. Together they had four children. He had 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

After 22 years in the Air Force, the family settled down in Applewood Mesa west of Denver. He was hired as the Operations Officer for the State of Colorado, Division of Disaster Emergency Services and worked directly under Governor Roy Romer. Dave was very involved with many of Colorado's natural disasters including the Big Thompson flood of 1976, tornadoes on the eastern plains and in Manitou Springs, and establishing centers and training personnel throughout the State.

Dave traveled the world with Nancy as members of The Friendship Force of Greater Denver. He loved to tinker with his antique cars, was a member of the El Jebel Sports Car Club and would often be seen driving in the Shiner parades. He was a dedicated Mason of Highlands Lodge No. 86 in Denver. He also loved woodworking, jewelry making and fine cuisine.

In 1999, Dave purchased a second home in Glen Haven, Colorado just outside of Estes Park. In his later years, you could find him feeding fish in his ponds or working in his woodshop or just sitting on the front porch with a Manhattan watching the wildlife.

Dave moved to the lower altitude of Fort Collins in 2017 where he resided until his death.
