Caroline Mabe Lee died May 5, 2021 at Well-Spring Retirement Community. She was born on October 1, 1922 in Spray, NC to the late Mamie Martha Dillon and Roland England Mabe. She was predeceased by her husband N. Clayton Lee. Caroline is survived by her daughter Martha Williamson and husband Harry (Skeeter) and their daughters Lee and Caroline, son Scott Lee and wife Sue Anne and their daughter Aria, and daughter Patricia (Patsy) Stegall and husband Charles and their children Jordan and husband Paul Lee, sons Dillon and Hunter, and great grandchildren Sawyer and Emerson Lee.

Caroline was from a musical family. Her father played trombone and saxophone. Her mother's family had enough musicians to have a small band. Caroline started piano lessons at age 5 and was involved in music all her life, including many years as a church organist and piano teacher. Her son Scott is a jazz bassist and teacher in New York City.

Caroline fell in love with the Greensboro Symphony Guild in 1966. She and her husband Clayton were avid music enthusiasts and classical and jazz concert goers. It was their pleasure to establish music scholarships in the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Greensboro Music Academy. Caroline was an energetic and tireless volunteer, particularly in the arts. Her consuming interest and love were the Greensboro Symphony and the Greensboro Symphony Guild, where she served on the board, as well as the boards of the Greensboro Music Academy, the Greensboro Opera Company, the Regional Chapter of the NC Symphony, the Board of Visitors for Guilford College, Chinqua Penn Plantation, and the early Auxiliary Board of Eastern Music Festival.

Caroline led the Symphony Endowment committee from the time it was started in 1985 for more than 20 years. In 2001, the Symphony Guild and community friends endowed the Associate Concertmaster's Chair in her honor. She and Clayton endowed a chair in honor of their son Scott. She received many recognitions and awards from various arts organizations, including a presentation by the Symphony Guild for its first Life Membership and Emeritus status.

For many years Caroline organized the music and played frequently for the Symphony Guild home tours and for the Women of the Church meetings at First Presbyterian Church. She had a special love for her family and friends. She loved teaching her grandchildren to play the piano and planning visits to parks and museums. In addition to her life in music, she enjoyed planning tennis, participating in several book clubs, collecting antiques, and giving loving attention to her "Secret Garden." Caroline brought energy and commitment to all of her endeavors.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Well-Spring for the kind, loving and professional care given to her during her years there, especially to those in Sycamore Square.

There will be a committal service at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium in Greensboro on Tuesday, May 11th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra Fund, mailed to Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, Inc., 200 N. Davie St., Greensboro, NC, 27401 or to the charity of their choice.
