Russell Dean Lawson was born into his loving family: parents, Bryce and Opal Lawson and big brother, Karl in Pawnee, Oklahoma on October 10, 1930. The family moved and Russ graduated from Borger High School in Borger, Texas. Later, Russ received his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech. He then joined the Navy and graduated from Officers Candidate School. Following his full-time Navy service as a Lt. Commander, Russ earned his master's degree at the University of Northern Colorado. He also met a tall blonde named Margaret Kaylor, and the two were married after a three-month courtship. It seems to have worked out, as the two celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Russ began his teaching career at Downy High in Modesto, then Del Valle High in Walnut Creek and finally San Joaquin Delta College, where he taught life science, primarily microbiology for thirty years. Russ also continued to serve as a Navy reservist.

Russ was a man of many interests including sailing, traveling the globe, watching football, reading, woodworking, and sharing stories with old friends or brand new acquaintances. He belonged to many organizations including The Geezers, The Marching Band and Chowder Society, Fleet One Sailing Club and the SJDC Teachers' Association.

Russ and Maggie's family grew to include son Kurt Lawson, (Tammy), daughter Susan Lawson, (Bob Curtis), three grandchildren, Karie Godzik, (Geoff), Kent Lawson, and Lucy Curtis, and great grandchildren, Anthony Lawson and Lilly Lawson.

Russ passed on March 30, 2021. A private internment will be held at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on May 24. An open house for family and friends will follow from 3:00 to 6:00 at the home of Nick and Pam Curtin, 2201 Covey Creek Court, Stockton. Let's toast Russell with a frosty cold one!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Read to Me Stockton!, 1346 E. Harding Way, Stockton, CA 95205 (or online), or American Cancer Society San Joaquin, 207 E. Alpine Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204, or a charity of your choice.
