Julia attended Clarendon County Public schools and graduated with honors. She attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Library Science and then a Master's Degree in Education.
Julia professed Christ as her Savior at an early age.
Julia Ragin met and married the love of her life, Crain E. Woods in 1959. They met in August and were married in December 1959. To this union one daughter was born, Karen Woods McCants (Charlton McCants and granddaughter, Ashley McCants).
Although they were briefly separated from each other in March of 2017 when Crain went to prepare their heavenly mansion, their love never wavered because it is eternal and now they are reunited. Julia was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She always put her family's interest before any other activity.
Julia loved her church and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. She served, along with Crain, faithfully as Co-Director of Vacation Bible School for many years. She was a faithful member of the Women's Missionary Society, the Board of Stewards, Church School, and Weekly Bible Study group. Julia loved helping people. One of her greatest times was spent teaching "English as a Second Language". Her students adored her because of her caring spirit towards them. Because of her encouragement and caring, many of them successfully completed the program.
Julia served as chairperson for the Myrtle Beach area Girl Scouts Cookie Sales for many years. In her later years, she and her husband, Crain, were cofounding members of the Cultural Arts Foundation Program. After her retirement, Julia continued her caring spirit through becoming a co-sponsor of the "Seniors Helping Seniors" non-profit organization.
Julia was an educator for 34 years, which included teaching English and being a librarian, with Clarendon County and Horry County Schools. She loved encouraging others to read so much, that after retirement she became a Reading Buddy volunteer for elementary school-aged children.
Realizing that "Weeping may endure for a while, but joy comes in the morning!" Julia will be greatly missed not only by her family, but by all who came to know her. Left to cherish her memories is her daughter, Karen Woods McCants; son-in-law, Charlton McCants; granddaughter, Ashley B. McCants the apple of her heart; two brothers, James Ragin and Rufus (Ernestine) Ragin of Summerton, SC; one sister-in-law, Johnnie Warren, Orangeburg, SC; one "adopted sister", Kathleen Lawson-Gibson of Summerton, SC and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
