On Saturday, May 1, 2021, Steven Kenneth Mitchell, machinist, loving husband, and father of four, passed quietly away at his New Paris home.
Steven was born on June 3, 1955, in Orlando, Florida. As the oldest child in a military family, he moved every few years: to Pennsylvania, Germany, Arizona, and finally back to Alaska, where the family settled and where young Steve spent his teenage years. When he finally left Alaska, it was to study theology at Hyles-Anderson College in Hammond, Indiana, where he met and married his beloved wife June on August 1, 1980 and where he also discovered an enduring passion for metalworking. After moving to the Goshen area in 1994, Steven soon started his own machine shop and was self-employed there for 25 years, first in Middlebury and then in New Paris. In his retirement he took up woodturning again, an old hobby set aside for many years due to the demands of business and family life.
Steven will be remembered by all who knew him as a warm-hearted family man whose principles were grounded in deep personal faith. He is survived by his parents, Ben and Grace Mitchell of Anchorage, Alaska; by two sisters, Brenda, and Patricia, and by a brother, Thomas; by his devoted wife of 40 years, June (Crosby) Mitchell; by his four children, Abigail, Benson, Byrel, and Meadow; and by seven grandchildren in Michigan and Switzerland.
Friends and family may visit on Wednesday, May 5, from 10-11am, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home in Goshen. A memorial service will follow at 11am.
